This summer, I am participating and performing in a very fun and inspiring violin program at the Heifetz Institute PEG in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
I have been working with faculty members from Juilliard and The Manhattan School of Music as well as other talented young musicians. I am making new friends and enjoying chamber music, fiddling - and still finding time to audition for Broadway and film and practice my other instruments!
I started to play the violin at age 4 and have been studying ever since. I study with both Dr. Linda Sinanian of Queens College and Dr. Cyrus Forough of Carnegie Mellon University. I am a former pupil of Dr. Stephanie Mocilan, Dr. Song-A Cho, Will Curry, Dr. Phil Gelfer and Dr. Joanna Kaczorowska.
For the last 4 years, I have played violin and piano in the New York State School Music Association Spring Festival. Clips of my performances and quotes from the judges of my violin performances appear below.
Watch this clip of me (11 years old) rehearsing Concerto no. 9 by Charles de Beriot with accompanist Pablo Lavandera for the 2017 Spring NYSSMA Festival.
Age 9, Czardas by Monti on a half-size violin. Accompanied by Dr. Pablo Lavandera of Stony Brook University. I received an A+ for this performance.
"Ava - excellent scale preparation. You produce a focused, pure tone. Fine bow control. Opening runs were exciting, accurate and stylistic. Double steps were even, well in tune and exciting. Excellent accuracy in the upper positions. Beautiful phrasing and development of the musical line in the Tranqullo. This is a very mature reading of this work combining advanced technique and sophisticated musicianship. Brava! Congratulations to you and to all of your music teachers."
VIOLIN ...Welcome Ava! Your tone is beautiful and technique is solid. Scales well prepared. A very musical performance, Ava! I applaud you on your memorization. This sounded wonderful with accompaniment. You produce a beautiful singing sound on your violin. Do your best to keep the bow straight when out near the tip to maintain your sound. Bravo Intonation! Can you do even more with dynamic contrast? Try to be softer for piano-range dynamics. I enjoyed hearing you play! Best of luck with your future musical endeavors! SR - very close! Keep rhythms steady in 6/8. Thanks for playing!"
